Greetings from Scarsdale High School—John Klemme, Principal

Scarsdale’s tradition of excellence in education continues this year as we implement deeper and richer courses of study in our Advanced Topics classes in English, Science, and Music Theory.  These subject areas now feature intensive study of authors, both classic and contemporary, the incorporation of cutting edge scientific issues such as string theory and developmental genetics, and the use of sophisticated technology in music composition.  In our third phase of the Advanced Topics Program next fall, we anticipate similar innovations in curriculum with revised courses in World Languages and Math.

As you may have read in The New York Times recently, the school has joined a group of high-performing public and private schools that have moved away from Advanced Placement courses in the quest to deepen the experience of students in our most accelerated classes. That decision has further distinguished us in American education, and a study conducted by the Steinhardt School at New York University has concluded that based on the data collected after the first year of implementation, the AT Program has not had a negative impact on college admissions or Advanced Placement test scores.   Furthermore, students and teachers report a more engaging and substantial curriculum that sharpens 21st century skills such as critical thinking and creative problem-solving, as well as the cultivation of habits of mind such as perseverance and an appreciation for the complexity of issues.     You can learn more about the Advanced Topics Program by going to these links on the Scarsdale Public Schools website:
