Meet the Latest Eric Rothschild Scholarship Awardees
Class of 2009 Awardee : Jacqueline Lash
This award acknowledges the outstanding academic achievements of a member of the senior class. The student who is receiving this award tonight exemplifies the best students we encounter at SHS, exemplary in many ways. While her transcript reflects the complexity and rigor of her courses as well as her stellar performance across our curriculum, this young woman’s strengths lie far deeper than any transcript could suggest. She is thoughtful, articulate, sophisticated and original in her thinking. She has it all – intellectual curiosity, razor sharp abilities and unfailing patience with those less gifted. On more than one occasion, she has been called a teacher’s dream, not only the effect of strong academic skills and a thirst for learning, but a tribute to what this young woman brings to our school and community at large. She is generous, compassionate, witty, self assured and humble.
Class of 2008 Awardee: Amy Tsang
This award acknowledges the outstanding academic achievements of a member of the senior class. 2008’s recipient possesses an extraordinary mind, the disposition of a scholar, and the heart of someone who aspires to dedicate her life to the betterment of the world. With an engaging, determined, and strong yet humble personality, this student truly thrives on learning in the classroom but understands the importance of the world as a living laboratory for the application of her ideas. Eventually she hopes to pursue a career in public service, global social justice, teaching, or international law. Her near-native fluency in Chinese and her experiences traveling, living, and interning in China and Southeast Asia as well as her facility with Spanish, which she has studied here, will augment her interests in world politics, the environment, and the enhancement of educational opportunities for children in the developing world. Preferring to dedicate herself to a few activities in a truly meaningful way, she has been a mainstay of our symphony orchestra for four years, playing first violin. Most significantly, she has demonstrated her leadership abilities as an officer of Model UN, a role in which her accomplishments have included mentoring younger members of the club, particularly teaching them some of the techniques of consensus-building that have brought her distinction as an award-winning delegate. She has frequently appeared before members of the faculty and district administration to report on her experiences traveling and later interning as a program alumnus in Hawaii, Thailand, and Cambodia with the “Partnership for Youth”, a program of the East-West Center. In December of 2006 she invited as one of two student participants to present at an East-West international conference in Hanoi. Praise for this young woman from her teachers abounds: “she’s a gem – only a few like her during a career”; “a real powerhouse”; “simply . . . the best”; “a treasure; “a person of integrity and maturity far beyond her years”.
 Class of 2007 Awardee: Bridget Donovan
How about a four-year transcript with all A’s? The winner of this year’s alumni award is an academic powerhouse. One of her teachers wrote. “As I enter my fifth decade in the classroom, she is one of the best students I have ever encountered.” No intellectual wall flower, this young woman has also starred in sports and in music.
Her own values press her to reach out to others. She teaches young children religious principles and supports human rights activities.
If you don’t know the winner yet of the 2007 Scarsdale Alumni Eric Rothschild Scholarship, she is also a mean Irish dancer.
